Conventionally cholecystectomy is done by laparoscopy by putting four holes over the abdomen. As the surgical field is evolving and technologies are becoming advanced day by day, especially in laparoscopic surgery, now this surgery can be performed by putting single incision over the abdomen.

Recently, this operation has been performed successfully for the very first time in Punjab at RG Stone and Super Speciality Hospital. The patient was a young lady and was distressed with gall stone problem since a long and was planning to do this operation in least possible invasive way. As per the plan, procedure went smoothly by single hole over the abdomen and patient was being discharged the next day. The surgery was a success with single scar, hence cosmetically superior with minimal need of medications and with no chance of pain in long run at other scar sites.

The dawn of new era of laparoscopy has been started and minimal invasive surgery has become more minimal. In the above single port cholecystestomy, state of the art imported instruments were used. After putting single incision over the abdomen; the flexible port was inserted and through the port miniature camera and miniature instruments were used to perform the surgery.

Therefore, while on the tour we decided for the surgery. We were warmly welcomed by it's medical superintendent & his core team. It was a pleasant experience of getting an expert treatment from Dr. H.S. Jolly (Laparoscopic Surgeon), Dr. S.V. Gupta (ENT Surgeon) & their team. After the surgery, within two days we were feeling much more comfortable.

All in all, we are really impressed by the facilities provided by the hospital. Thanks to entire RG Stone family. Keep it up...

Therefore, while on the tour we decided for the surgery. I searched on the web about the best hospital for the hernia treatment. We found so many hospitals but after going through several enquiries, we both decided to go for speciality hospital that is RG Stone, Ludhiana.

A team of doctors at RG Stone and Super Speciality Hospital, successfully performed a highly advanced needloscopy operation on three and a half year old girl, Anisha for removal of gall stones. It was the first surgical procedure of its kind in Punjab.

The surgery known as “micro-invasive laparoscopic cholecystectomy or needloscopy” was performed by Dr H.S. Jolly, Chief Laparoscopic Surgeon at the centre, who was assisted by Dr Anand Sehgal, Urologist, and Dr Bhupinder Pal Singh, Consultant Anesthesiologist.

Dr Jolly informed that Anisha had been complaining of pain in the abdomen for close to a year but all medications had failed to help her. With time, she also developed recurrent nausea and vomiting along with generalised weakness. As her symptoms worsened, her parents brought her to city hospital.

“Thorough examination and investigations revealed that Anisha had a stone in her gall bladder, which was the reason for her agony. She was admitted to the hospital on May 8 where the child underwent needloscopy on May 9. In this procedure, state-of-the-art miniature laparoscope (4 mm), also known as needloscope, was used and only three very small holes of 5 mm were made through the abdomen. After 72 hours of observation, the patient was found to have fully recovered.”

Dr Jolly said gall stones were earlier treated conventionally by open cholecystectomy, but with the development of laparoscopy and minimal invasive surgical techniques, laparoscopic cholecystectomy was the treatment of choice even in children. Dr Jolly claimed that the advantages of needloscopy over the routine laparoscopic surgery were invisible scar, lesser hospital stay, lesser pain and lesser requirement of medication.

Moreover, the minimal invasive surgery, or for that matter a procedure like needloscopy, was not that expensive and cost almost the same like traditional surgery, if shorter stay in the hospital and fast recovery were taken in consideration.
